Ideally a combination of both should be best. Adding muscle by weightlifting should increase the amount of calories you burn as you're doing aerobics. For overall health, I would think that aerobics is the more beneficial. It's important to keep in mind, though, that you'll probably have the best success with something that you enjoy doing (since you're more likely to keep it up!).

It is important to include three things in any workout, and that would be weight/strength training, Toning and Aerobics/Cardio.
You need to do both of them. They go hand in hand. You will firm your body up more doing weigh ttraining than you will doing aerobics and you will burn fat a whole lot more doing aerobics than if you are weight training.

It depends on your purpose for exercise. If it is to condition your cardiovascular system, I would suggest doing more aerobics. If you want to be more muscular, you should concentrate on weight training. In general, people do a mixture of both since they want to get the benefits of both aerobic exercise and weight training.
