Dilly and Dally were two well known people in ipswich back in 1903 during the revolutionary times. Dilly was in shoemaking while dally was in baking industry. Somehow or other, in the small town where people place their orders for shoes or pastry, Dilly always delivers them slower while Dally always tells them "it'll be done soon" while delaying for days.
It soon became a well known term when people started saying dont be like Dilly & Dally. The phrase soon evolved to Dilly Dally.

In early England In the 1800's people would show up late for a variety of reasons.
Some would stop off at a pub, where they would dilly and drink a pint. Others
would stop off at a girlfriends for quickie sex, hence a dally, from which our
word dalliance is derived.

It's been originated by ab-origine. Aborigine learnt from ancient Japanese saying "Delle Delle" which means dilly dally.

Well. the fact is that a lot of meats that most people aren't familiar with eating really do taste like chicken, and since chicken is a meat that most people have eaten, it was a good way to describe how the less eaten meats taste. For example, armadillo, frog, alligator and turtle really are similar to chicken. Hence, tastes like chicken. I agree, though, that it is used too much and about things that have nothing to with the phrase itself.

The word "dillydally" is just a reduplication of the word dally (to dawdle), but I prefer Ben's Ipswich "explanation" - it's very creative!
