At a different venue. Not more than 30 minute's drive away. Perhaps 20 minutes.
When you set a goal that the reception must be within a mile or two from the wedding venue, you'd be limiting your choices of restaunts or clubs where you can cater your reception. Example: Some people may want to get married at a particular church where their family worship but it's in a residential part of town where there're no restaurants or ones that can accomodate a big crowd for the reception. Then they have to chose a location some miles away to get the right facilities.
On the other hand, when the locale for your wedding is too far away from where you can get a place for your reception, you'll need to rethink your church selection. Either choose one closer to the restaurants/clubs or have the reception at the church. I think when it takes more than 30 minutes to drive from one location to the other; it can be an imposition to your guests.

My wedding and the reception were in the same building.
My brother in laws wedding was in a church and the reception was just in front of the church ( there is a nice garden area there).
My sisters wedding was in a church and the reception was at a near by restaurant.
My uncles wedding was in a park as was the reception.
My cousins wedding was in a restaurant as was the reception.
Hope this helps ya!
Good luck and God Bless!

Our wedding is going to be on the balcony of the room where the reception will be, so it's literally a matter of a few steps for our guests, which works well, because we have a few elderly folks joining us.
If something like that works out for you, and it fits into your perfect day, then great. If not, this is your day, so do what you have to. Just try to remember to consider anyone who has trouble getting around.
Also for the convenience of everyone, I would book the reception more than 3-5 miles from the wedding.

I had my wedding and reception at the same place..I really feel like it was easier than having everyone go to another place. Plus I had it an hour from where I lived so I had already rented a bus just to take everyone down to where the wedding was.

In the same town. About 1 km from the church. We also took most of our pictures before the ceremony and a few in between the ceremony and reception so there was only about an hour in between. We had a lot of people from out of town and when you have hours between the ceremony & reception, these people don't have any where to go. It worlds well for us. My husband is Dutch and it is a Dutch tradition for the groom to bring the bride her bouquet. It ended up a HOT HOT day so the pictures form the morning were beautiful. The ones later on were not as nice b/c we were all sweaty looking- that sounds bad but we looked "fresher" in the morning pics.

My wedding and reception were in different places. It was like a 10 minute drive between the two venues. I set about 45 minutes between the end of the wedding and beginning of reception for pictures, greetings, and travel. GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS!

We had our wedding and reception in different locations. We provided simple instructions on the wedding brochures to let the guests know where to go. It was only 5 minutes away. I have been to some where the reception is in a different town.

My wedding reception was on the same block as the church, but we still drove all over town honking our horns, and all the guests drove from one parking lot to the other ( it was 20 degrees below zero that day). I doesn't matter that much where your wedding and reception are. I would try to keep them within 10 miles of each other though your guests aren't going to want to drive around all day.
