Storing food in the microwave is really unsanitary.Unless its bread, chips, and can foods.Other than that, all food should be stored in the fridge or freezer. If the food is being kept in the temperature danger zone, then it is growing bacteria. 41 degrees F- 140 degrees F Since room temperature is between that zone, then you are growing bacteria.

I some times put food in the microwave for a few hours, but never over night. We eat dinner at 5:30pm some times my husband works late so I cover his food and put it in the microwave till he gets home. I guess it's all a matter of preference. I do think it's unsafe to eat food that's been out all night, whether it's been in the microwave or out on the counter. For more then a few hours the fridge is the safest place for food. Someone who's been doing this for a long time or maybe all there life may be offended mostly because you used the word "unsanitary" suggesting that they might be filthy or unclean, but also because this is also learned if mom, dad, or grandparents do it then they think it's standard procedure, and that everyone does it.

If its something that doesn't need to be refridgerated, I don't see the problem with leaving it in there for a couple hours, but that's just me. I know if my house, we all get home at different times, and my food is always waiting in the microwave. Its its something that can go bad, then yeah, don't leave it in the microwave.

The only thing that goes in my microwave that isn't being cooked is when I'm defrosting meat and I don't want the dog or cat to sniff it out and knock it off the sink!
I SO know where you are coming from, but these people can't be told. Just be sure never to eat or drink there. I'd hate to think what the bathroom looks like!
