I was at a Toronto shopping mall on the weekend. While I stopped my car waiting for a space there was also a mini van stopped about 20 spaces down, by the entrance of the mall. At this point 2 people exited the mall and the mini van targetted one of the people. The other person walked to my end of the lane, and I signalled. It happened that the person targetted by the mini van walked across to other lanes. At this time the guy in the van pulled up to me saying because he was waiting longer, any space in that lane belonged to him. I find this logic to be baffling. I refused to give up my space and parked there. He was furious, got out of his car and told me I was stupid. I think I am a passive guy who does not like confrontations. Whenever thers is any doubt (if both signalled the same time), I usually give up the space but in this case it was a clear case of bullying. Knowing how crazy people can be nowadays, does that mean I should not stood up?

You are correct. His thinking HE has first right to ANY space in that row is stupid, and he has a lot ot learn.

The same thing happened to me at my work site, a guy came rushing up behind me telling me that the space I had just parked in was HIS.

I said "since MY car is in there, that makes it MY space, brother".

Like it or not, that's how it works.

I NEVER try to take a spot that someone is OBVIOUSLY waiting for. That's wrong.

Yeah you did the right thing. You would have been the fool had you let him have his way and he would be "laughing all the way to the bank" because he got away with it. Too bad, so sad. Parking is a lottery. He was close, but you were closer and the rule of closeness wins out in parking situations.
How did you know he was looking for a parking space, he may just be driving slowly waiting for somebody to run in and out...therefore not needing a space. 2 bad.
I have the same go on here in B.C. with old people, but in this case they will wait on the street with signal light on until the person comes out of the store and get into their vehicle which could be 5-15 minutes. By this time I have found another spot farther away...done my shopping and come to my car again to see them still waiting on the road with signal light going.. Just not thinking.

You are right but it is seems so hard to do the right thing nowadays with too many psychos and irrational people out there. Is it worth it if the whole thing escalates into a fight let alone something worse? Then again if decent people constantly give up their rights because they feel threatened, bullies always get their way. That is not right either. I think in your case it was clear that the other person is being unreasonable, no doubt whatsoever so you should stand up for yourself just do it in a firm dalm and polite way. No need to fuel the rage.

Just go ahead and continue your passive attitude -- it is easier to find another park slot that to be shot dead by some bully/ A hole...if you are near a space then pull up and block other autos from taking the park slot... life is really too short to worry about this situation and when you stand-up for yourself you have to suffer the outcome whether or not it is good or bad.... park out from the door get some exercise and don't get your blood pressure to the boiling point.. the guy was a jerk and do not put yourself on his level

you absoulutley have the right to stand up and not back down, that guy is an idiot to get all mad over something so insignificant. that reminds of a few days ago on yahoo answers this guy asked if hitler was the greatest conquerer ever and i said no Alexander the great was and next thing i know this guy is emailing me calling me an idiot and all these bad words just cause i disagreed with him. I agree there is too many crazy people in the world, if I were you i wouldn't have left my car im surprized he didn't key it or something.

That's too bad........ for him. Survival of the fitest. If you were closer to the spot that opened up, and had been waiting, then you are in the right. One can not 'stand' in front of the entry way to the mall and then expect to speed to the open space. ABSURD!!
