I think it depends on how high you want your ponytail. If you want a high ponytail, then you need at least 8 inches, if you want a low ponytail, than about 15.

I doesn't matter there can be short ponytails or long one's ,just try to put it in a ponytail, and if it doesn't stay up, then put hair brats in it, or try it it on the side or up higher or lower ect.
