Hello. I Just got a Panasonic TH-42PX60U. I have an older Panasonic DVD-S35 DVD player (progressive scan). I'm about to go out and buy component cables (not S-video cable which is the only other plug in the back of the dvd player).

Should I buy the component cables or just go buy a new upscaling DVD player?

Thanks from a true newbie.

Just use the DVD player you have for now. Component cables will get you great picture quality and you will be able to take advantage of the progressive scan capabilities of your DVD player with these as well. Make sure you enable this option on your DVD player. It will either be in the on screen setup menu or as a switch on the unit itself.

You're TV has a built in upscaler that will automatically scale the 480p resolution sent out by your DVD player to the native resolution of the display. The reason why upconverting DVD players exist is just because they have chips that try to do it better than the built in upscalers. Some DVD players excel at this and some do it no better or even worse than the TV.

Will it make a difference if you had a very good quality upconverting DVD player such as an OPPO? Yes it would make a difference. Is it worth dumping a perfectly good DVD player and buying a $200+ one? No. The difference in picture quality will be minimal and mainly discernable in text. Most people will not be able to tell the difference watching the actual movie from normal viewing distances.

Also, when you go buy component cables, DO NOT let them sucker you into Monster or other expensive cables that will claim to increase your picture quality. Either get a generic phillips or something brand for fairly cheap or buy them from www.monoprice.com. Try not to spend over $20 for a 6 foot cable.

Enjoy your television. It is an excellent plasma.

P.S. turn the video settings off "Vivid" and to "standard". Vivid will oversaturate some colors and make things look unnatural.

The least expensive is to buy the component video cables.

Next, you can opt for the upscalling DVD player and still be
able to use the component video cables or an HDMI cable.

Or, you can just go for the HD DVD player (or Xbox 360) or
the Blu-Ray Disc player (or PS3). A universal player will be
coming out soon if you want to wait for that.

Give the component video cables a try and see, and if you're
not impressed with the improvements, then go with either of
the two additional options. Really, since you have an HDTV
now, you really should get the most out of it with the absolute
best resolution you can afford.

No, just buy component cables.
Your TV has an excellend scaler/deinterlacer and can do as good a job, if not better, than any upscaling player.

A word of caution. Your Panasonic has a special picture option for turning "black level" on or off. Your DVD player may also have a special video menu with "black level" on/off. Make sure that they match, otherwise your picture will be either very black - losing details, or blacks will be whashed out!
If your DVD player has no such option, try both options on your TV and see which one gives best blacks, without losing detail.
(A test disc would be of great help here, but you can use any dark scene in a DVD movie as well)

Your regular DVD player will still work with the tv, it just won't be high definition. Definitely use component, it will look much netter than S-video.
There are no 'upscaling' dvd players, per se. You can't make a picture look any better than its original source. Your tv will do some processing to match its native resolution but your picture will still only be standard definition. The only way to get a hi-def picture from a DVD is to purchase one of the new HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players and feed it a Hi-Def source.

The DVD player you have now is fine. Your television has a video processor built in that upscales the image. If you buy a really nice DVD player that upscales, you may get a marginal increase in picture clarity, depending on the DVD you play.
