I love my doggy, and usually this isnt a problem, but not long after he turned 1, he red rockets all the time! i get so grossed out. i know its a natural thing for him, but it went from being a once a month thing to like 8 plus times a day and its always around me. is it normal for them to red rocket that often? on a scared dog owners point of view, im sort of afraid to spend much time around him because as soon as he sees me, out it comes. up until now i thought he saw me more as a mother since i saved him from the pound as a pup, but now...just ewwww. he is fixed too, so thats another worry- is it normal for them to red rocket when they are fixed? i love my dog and i want him to be happy and healthy.

First of all what you are describing as a red rocket is actually the dogs penis. Usually this happens when males are not neutered. But you are saything that he is... are you sure?

He needs to get to a vet to be checked out. He could have an infection going on and that could be causing his penis to keep coming out.

Please take him to a vet!

My dog did something very similar, only it was his paws. He also broke out all over and had a horrible smell no matter how often or what i bathed him in. Turns out it was Candidae, or yeast. Your dog may just have a "hot-spot" - just an irritated patch of dry skin. You can give him or her OTC Benadryl for a couple of days to relieve the itch, my vet ok'd it for my dog. Bathe him/her in an antifungal medicated soap. Wal-Mart sells one that is put out by a vet, about $10.00 and try some anti-itch cream or Gold-Bond medicated powder on the hot spot. If it continues or worsens, try switching diets. My dog would NOT eat those specialty limited ingredient foods or grain free foods and they are expensive. I cook chicken for him and add in a bit of cooked rice. This is all he ever gets to eat. Nothing else! The rash is now gone and so is the odor! No more chewing on his feet either! Good luck!

Get him castrated. He should stop having erections, or at least lessen the occurrence once his testosterone level falls. If you are not planning on breding him, there is no reason not to. In the long run he will be a happier healthier dog.

I too did not know what red rocket meant.

what in the world is "red rocketing"? try using normal terminology from now on so EVERYbody understands what you are asking.

Quite possibly, he has an injury or illness. Take him to the vet. Spinal cord injuries can cause that in humans.
