I thought palmolive was dishwashing soap?
Scientists still don't know what the exact cause of dandruff is, but there are theories on the matter. Some attribute dandruff to lack of rest and too much stress. Bad nutrition, using too much gel and hairspray, and shampooing too often and not rinsing enough may also have a hand in it.
If your parents had it, you may also get it. Heredity can either make you flat-out develop dandruff or make you more vulnerable to the factors that cause the condition.
People with oily dandruff usually have the condition because of a hormonal imbalance. Overactive oil glands on the body can force a premature shedding of the skin. If that's the case, then dandruff is often present on other parts of the body too. Dry dandruff, on the other hand, is a result of blocked oil glands -- different looking flakes, same result -- except that it's mainly located on the head.
Another theory maintains that certain bacteria and fungi cause dandruff. There still isn't enough data to prove whether or not bacteria cause dandruff, but it is present in some cases of dandruff. Yeast infections, on the other hand, can influence it. The fungus is always present among us, but for some reason it spreads too much on certain people, causing dandruff. Some believe dandruff is an allergic reaction to yeast. You itch when your dandruff is caused by a yeast problem.
Seasons also influence dandruff. Some people have more dandruff in the winter because of the dry weather, so you guessed it, summer often means mild dandruff.
HOW TO GET RID OF IT:
Many shampoos claim they can treat dandruff. For a shampoo to have any medicinal effect on the scalp, it has to contain at least one of these ingredients:
zinc pyrithione
selenium sulfide
coal
tar
salicylic acid
sulfur
The best dandruff shampoos contain zinc pyrithione and/or selenium sulfide because these two agents slow down the scaling process. People with dandruff should wash their hair with these shampoos twice a week, but most brands are mild enough to use daily.
Every brand uses different ingredients; keep that in mind because using the same kind of shampoo for too long can make it lose its initial effect. Switching brands every so often should do the trick.
If itching and dandruff still persist, the condition could be caused by a yeast problem, in which case a doctor can prescribe a shampoo containing ketoconazole.
Even cortisone creams present an alternate way to deal with the problem. Dandruff cannot be cured, so the problem can resurface once treatment stops.

Head and shoulders anti-dandruff is the best I've ever tried. It does work all the time, but may be the first time he accidently left some soap in. Remember to rinse your hair thoroughly when using any shampoo because it will leave it flaky and 'dandruffy'.

You have to remember that a product will not work instanteously, it will take some time to work. I have used Selsun Blue in the past, and it worked like a charm (after 3 or 4 washes).
You can purchase at your local convenience store.
