Same reason plugs need socket. Without one the current wont flow and your bulb wont glow.

one doesn't need a girl friend just a friend is more than enough, girl or boy doesn't matter. A friend is important coz he accepts you as u r and is there for when you need them, friends can guide us, direct us or basically stick along.
Girls are needed for sex and reproduction.
Or if by girl friend you mean only those dating kind of relations, then man you need them coz u feel good that there's a girl who supposedely loves you. Second you are not gay and third you can easily go to parties where there's couple entry as you already have a date. But believe me girls are very clingy by nature they like to be held and hugged from time to time and this gets on your nerves.
So now you decide whether you need a friend in life or a girl

One shouldn't need a girlfriend in his life! One should feel complete on his own with hobbies and chores and work and outings, etc. A girlfriend only adds to the happiness. There are ups and downs with any relationship so having someone to call your own doesn't always make things better or good, for that matter. Be confident, secure in yourself, happy with every choice and choosy about who you choose. Then, and only then, will the result be a great one!

Girl friend is relatively new concept, even in western society, if you touch a girl about say 100 years back, and you were a good catch then a shot gun wedding were in order, if you were considered unsuitable, the you suffered a good pounding, of some kind.
Times have changed and it is reflected in the answers.
