In families with a genetic predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer the tumor suppressor gene BRCA is frequently mutated (BRCA1 and BRCA2).

There are probably hundreds of genes that can be affected in ovarian cancer. Cancer is rarely (less than 5%) caused by 'your genes'. It is a genetic disease in that the genes are DAMAGED by the individual's environment. But most cancers are not 'pre-programmed' in your genes.
