That's a big mistake! Sorry, but I agree...she sounds like a liability.

She could have killed the patient.

That's terrible. Pretty heavy consequences for a mistake, huh? But that's how they do things.

Look around in your area and on the web for support groups. Things like this happen pretty often believe it or not. A friend of mine got stripped of her RN license for failing a drug test. She accidentally took one of her grandmother's medical marijuana pills. She got help from a support group, and now, even though she can't do patient care, she works for an insurance company, reviewing medical claims. She really likes it.

So, your gfriend's career isn't over. She just may need to find another way to do her job. It will be okay.

Nurses don't usually lose their license for just giving the wrong medication unless they feel like she did it on purpose?? If not on purpose, then I could see the firing but not the lost license, maybe suspension and some form of re-training required....she could get a lawyer if she feels they overstepped their bounds.

She should call a suicide hotline...they are in the phone book. She can still get a job in another field. It will be hard but it is possible.

it would depend on the medication given, it is so hard to answer this as the NMC would not just drop a nurse like that. what affect did it have on the patient?, I would say go seek advice, talk to a ward manager, maybe talk to the RCN or unison. this really is a nurses nightmare the loss of a pin number, good luck.

Good thing the patient wasn't seriously harmed. ive heard a case when a person killed a patient in a similar case.

she can go to some hospital and get more practice. maybe that will help. or she can always have another job.

I am not sure what you can do, my thoughts are what lead up to giving the wrong medication?
Was she tired, not paying attention, or where there other reasons why she did not double check like she normaly would?
All people make mistakes, its part of life, you know the human thing.
Watching shows like ER, Grays Anatomy, they all make mistakes, sometimes huge ones.. unfortunitly its not real life and they never seem to get fired.
Tell her to take it to the medical review board and see if there is anything at all she can do to keep her licence or her ability to work there.

tell her go to the highest boss in the hospital and explained what happened. i know its not a nice thing to happen. as they say it could happen to the pope. does she have to sign that she gave it to the patient i thought in a hospital that if you give someone medication there has to be 2 people to sign for it, was there someone else with her when she did this
