The idea expressed above of living on US$200 a month is perhaps based on a misunderstanding of what some of the foreign books about Thailand say about average wages in Thailand. Many Thai people do earn about US$200 a month however there are probably several people in the same household working (husband, wife, assorted aunties & uncles, etc.) and one or two of these people probably have at least 2 jobs - one in the daytime & one in the evening. Maybe even a stall at a market at the weekend. In most families all the members of the family pool their wages (the bank account into which the money goes is probably controlled by the most senior woman in the household who has not yet reached old age) and the result is enough to run a household - a lot more than US$200. That's just how Thailand is.

As a foreign visitor to Thailand the expense is really driven by what you want to do. Theoretically a person could make it really cheap by going to a run-down hotel, eating food from the market and watching TV. It would be very cheap but what would be the point? It would be a boring, miserable existence.

For a sensibe figure, in addition to accomodation cost, I would suggest a budget of US$25 per day for the basics and US$50 per day for fun (drinking, sightseeing, etc.).

I have been many times and have a g/f there. There are many places of interest, but I guess a lot depends on what interests you. Personally, I would avoid the seedier places as they are not a true reflection of what the Thai people are really like. A few suggestions would include the floating market (you have to go early in the morning as it closes around midday), Safari World, Dream World, Chokchai Farm, the Bayoke Tower (the tallest building in BKK, a trip on the Chao Phraya river or a little further out, Ayutthaya (the former capital, about 50 miles north of BKK).

For more useful info, try http://wwwtourismthailand.org the website of the Tourist Authority of Thailand.

I hope you enjoy your stay there.

Bangkok is not an expensive city. In fact, you can dine at the best restaurants and it wouldn't be that expensive. You can enjoy the cheap shopping of the city and the cheap drinks at clubs and bars. You can stay in the best hotels in downtown city and still find it reasonably priced. Whatever it is, you will have a good vacation in Bangkok.

I suggest you go to the Grand Palace and some Buddhist temples nearby the area such as Wat Prakaew and Wat Po. You should also take a trip on the boat to the floating market. I suggest you go to MBK, Siam and the Chatuchak market for shopping. I suggest you stay at Sukhumvit area, in the heart of Bangkok city. There are many hotels which are not too expensive such as Novotel Lotus, Bel Aire Princess, Grand Mercure Park Avenue.

Check out www.excelloz.com for more hotel descriptions. The website is very easy to browse and provides useful and interesting information for everyone. You can also read Bangkok travel guides and get ideas of places to visit, where to dine, nightlife and more.

the temple of the tigers... or the tiger temple.

www.tigertemple .co.uk

This place IS LEGIT and not abusing tigers. the tigers were there and loved long before the tourists started comming down.

Ie you get to cuddly and walk them walkies.

If you worked there and got to know them you could proably play with them or at least the smaller ones.

Points to remeber.

If not on a strict timetable. Odd are there are plenty of decent hotels next doo and a lot cheaper only not in your tour agent... ie stay fe days and find somewhere else.

Koh Toh to learn to scuba dive.

Chang Mai jungle trip...

Oh and take a load of cash of gift for all the hill tribe children who will put on a show for you...

we were told we only needed a little cash then looked total scum when we had little to give them As no ATMs in the jungle.

Scams to avoid...

Never book a VIP bus in a TAT (Thai travel agent) a VIP is a long distance coach... Book them from the actual bus station itself ONLY or you WILL regret it and wont save money in long run.

Sleeper coaches also good,.

Bangkok is very cheap if you do it right.

Ie your travel agent will quote you say 17 pounds 1200 bhatt. You can find places for 300 bhatt that are good.

ALWAYS insist on meters in taxis and get them away from hotels and tourist spots.

Most of the traffic IS taxis or get the subway or monorail or bus

Dont fall for tuk tuk scams like taking you to dodgy jewl shops and tour from shop to shop instead of where you want to go.

Oh and if you want to check out naughty ladies... Soi Cowboi is safe and not nasty...

You are only at risk there if you hit a girl then deserve what you get.

The only hastle is somone wants tyou to sit and get a drink as you walk in which is annoying but hardly life threatening

"I would avoid the seedier places as they are not a true reflection of what the Thai people are really like"

Ha Ha. good one. these things belong to thai culture just as much as does the superb food, friendlyness and hospitality that Thais are famous for. And so what. This doesnt make Thailand one bit less interesting and fun. Relax.

For the "normal" nightlife go to http://ww.bangkokrecorder.com and see whats up. my favorites are Astra, Flix, Q Bar.

The Grand Palace is a must ..... Also, remember to travel on the Skyway. It is the overground transport system and we found it very safe!!

If you can fit in a few temples then please do ... The Thais are very proud of their heritage and love to speak about it!!

We never found it expensive - we've been there about 4 times!

Enjoy
