People smoke for very different reasons:
Advertising techniques play a role. Not only pictures like they are now but there used to be TV commercials and sporting events promoted by cigarette commercials.
to fit in (peer pressure)
To feel older
because they think it makes the look cool
Oral fixation: What that means is that some people are stimulated by their moth. these are the people that smoke eat lots of candy and are happiest when they doing these activities.
Living with smokers
Addictive tendencies: Some people are more susceptible to being addictive to Tabasco, alcohol, drugs and food. This turns into a habit that is extremely hard to quit.
nicotine is in cigarettes and illegal narcotics and is a very addictive substance.
There is also the "superman complex" "I won't die. I'm different than the others who die every day"
hope this helps..

+ Well peer pressure and to look cool at first. Later regretting ever starting!
If you want to get your point across that you don't like her smoking tell her that you would be around her when she's smoking which will mean less quality time spent with you, Which if it does not get her to quit then hopefully she will cut down to 3 or 4 a day or less!
Stop telling her to quit and don't point out the health reasons because she already knows them. She probley wishes that she could quit but It's harder than anyone thinks! If you have never smoked in your life then you should not judge others for smoking because in most cases they are trying to quit! It just will make most smoke more if told they need to quit!
I don't smoke around my son because he has shown that he does not want to be around it. So I had to cut back to have quality time with him!
I hope this helps and good luck!

I smoked my first one in high school just because we would share one and I liked the taste....we didn't any of us drink and no drugs were around then
I have smoked, quit for up to 5 years at a time...just off and on most of my life...just depends on how I feel mostly
Its a mind thing....if you really WANT to you lay them down...if not you smoke them .....I do now for I like to get up early, go out on patio and drink my coffee, read the paper, and smoke my first one before anyone else gets up...
I go for regular checks up...heart...pulmonologist if they say to etc and so far they don't even believe I smoke by the test results..actually I just burn most of them or puff not inhale...just habit I think ....can't smoke in the day time.too busy to take the time....again its a mind thing doesn't bother me then
but why do people over eat? why do they drink? do drugs? drive too fast? anything unhealthy or dangerous? genetics and habit

it starts b/c they want to look cool or peer pressure. Later it becomes a habit and an addiction where it's hard to stop even knowing it's bad for you

People start because of peer pressure..
Soon, it feels good to smoke, you enjoy it...
You don't quit because it feels good and you
are addicted to the feeling / nicotine..
Nicotine addiction is not difficult to break..
The main problem is the easy access to & availability
of cigrettes while you are trying to break the addiction.

at first it's out of curiosity, or peer pressure, or influence.. then nicotine makes the body succumb for more.. then, it goes on and on..
