The term New and Old are misnomers.
The accurate way to define these texts is 'the Hebrew and Greek scriptures'.
The entire scriptures (Hebrew/Greek) form one complete message and are inseparable.

The Hebrew Scriptures (commonly referred to as the Old Testament) and the Christian Greek Scriptures (commonly referred to as the New Testament) are, according to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, all inspired of God and make up God’s word in their entirety. Thus Romans 15:4 teaches us that all things written aforetime (the Hebrew Scriptures) were written for our instruction.
Simply put, the Christian Greek Scriptures are a continuation of God’s word in the Hebrew Scriptures and also a fulfillment of the prophecies recorded in the Scriptures. That fulfillment continues to this day.

The Old testament is called the Tanach in Hebrew and is composed of the writings of the prophets before the birth of the Messiah.
The New Testament is the Brit Khadishah, or New Covenenant which was prophesied by Jeremiah in chapter 31 and is a compilation of writings by the apostles, and eyewitnesses.

The old testament is referred to as the Talmud in Judaism which points toward a Messiah that will bring peace to the world. The New Testament is the backbone of Christianity which proclaims Jesus to be the Messiah. Therefore, the distinction comes from the fulfillment of prophecy according to Christians.

The old testament is before the birth of jesus and the new testament is about the new covenant with jesus. They are both interesting works of literature and have some good fables which some people take to be literal although most are obviously mythology.

Old Testament is the Old Contract, New Testament is the New Contract.
In the Old Contract Jesus was outside the people or his spirit was on the people. Under the New Testament Jesus lives in us, not on us. Real Christians, have the peace of Christ within them.

The Old Testament is the Prediction of what is to come. (Jesus Christ)
The New Testament if the fulfillment of what was prophesied. (the coming of the true Messiah)
The two go hand in hand with the other, regardless one was in Hebrew and the other in Greek.

As I understand it, the old testament is the scriptures that the followers used before the birth of Christ. The New Testament follows the life of Christ and all he did.
