Whenever I get Windows vista, I want to install it to my computer. I have so much info on my computer, and I was just wandering if I could install windows vista and keep all of my things on my computer. I can't really back everything up. I could, but that would take hours. If so, how would I do the install of vista without losing everything?

I asked the techs at Dell about this. They said they recommended removing all data and starting with a clean (formatted) hard drive. I had data saved and transferred at a computer shop, but it was not cheap !

You won't like this answer but here goes...

Chances are you computer is pretty old anyway and Vista may not run on it very well. For ex, we already know Vista requires a super-duper video card which you probably don't have. Why not just wait and buy a Vista-loaded computer after Jan 30??

If you insist, I'd buy a new hard drive to use as the primary and keep your original hard drive as slave. That way you resolve all that.

yes! here's your options: 1. from another computer for example in a computer shop, bring a floppy disk 1.44MB, commonly inserted in A:\, if the computer in the shop is using windows 98 or 2000, insert the disk, then go to the control panel, add/remove programs, then it has 3 tabs, click the third tab, you will see create a boot disk, click it then your 1.44MB disk will be a boot disk. after that, insert the disk to your pc that doesn't have any OS (operating system), then turn on your computer, just wait then you will see that your computer is in DOS MODE.... you will see A:\ .... then type format C: , then it will ask you if you're sure, click yes.... then wait for it then it will be formated... note: do not create boot disk on windows xp.. it will not work. 2.you can use a CD installer of any OS,,, win98, 2000, xp, or even vista.... as you are installing the os it will show an option saying if you want to format the disk... click yes then its ok... 3. you may insert your hard disk on a computer....then if you are using win xp, you will see automatically the hardisk as D:\, right click on the harddisk and click format ,,, thats it.. good luck!

What you want to do is called upgrading, because you won't be losing any of your existing data; you'll just be changing the operating system.
