These are addictive habits, you can't make them stop.

Try to understand, too, that as addictive habits that means they aren't really totally in control of their choices here. It's not just hard, it's beyond hard, and for each individual it is different -- few can quit cold turkey, some have an easier time than others.

One thing that won't help is pestering them about it. Sounds like they already know there is a problem, and I'm betting stress is a large part of it. Maybe you can brainstorm to find some way to add some relaxation into your lives, as a family -- it's hard as a modern family to find together time but even a few hours once a week for exercise or gaming or something has multiple rewards. Work on adding positive things into your (and their) lives, getting rid of the negatives is going to have to be each parent's individual choice in their own time.

Most likely, they won't stop until they realize how serious and the dangers of it. But, what you can do is look up online the hazards of what drinking and smoking does to you. Show them how bad it is for them and that they might not live very long because of it. Show them how it affects your life and maybe they will come to their senses.

Also, if their parents died from smoking/drinking, ask them to consider how they felt at that time (assuming that they started after that time).

You can't. It is their life and their home. Just back off and realize they know how you feel about it and you cannot make them quit. However, my kids did ask me not to smoke in the house as their teachers thought they were smoking just from being in the house. So, we quit smoking in the house. Ask them nicely to try and smoke away from you - tell them your friends and teachers can smell it and it is embarassing for you. Nicely!!

You can't make them stop...they have to want to stop.

If you want to try anyway, show them real photos of diseased lungs and livers from smokers and drinkers. Do research on the damage of second hand smoke which they are contributing to your health. Tell them how much they mean to you and how much you want them around for a s long as possible. If they smoke in front of you, a last resort would be to take them to court and sue them for child endangerment.
