Upon meeting you they know you are single, and before you even get to know them, or as you are talking they let that be the first thing they let you know, even though they claim to be single.

I think they are saying this as a form of reverse psychology, they probably think it will scare the guy off if they say they are looking for a boy friend, so they try to play it cool and tell they guy what they think he wants to hear.

when they first meet you. maybe they aren't really looking for a relationship at first. but things happen and they may start to like you.
