She seems to be fine in every other way, just struggling to have a wee. When she does manage there's only a thimbleful at a time. Any ideas?

It might be cystitis. Have a look at the link below.

Best thing to do is take her to the vet.

Bless her little heart.

It sounds like crystals which is a build up of various chemicals. simialr to kidney stones in people. I have just got my cat over it two days ago. The cat will need veterinatry attention asap as it can be fatal if left. The good thing is is that there is some urine coming out so its not at danger point. But take her the vet as she will need a steroid injection and may need to go on a hills prescription diet.

Its very common more in makes than females but it is known as struvite. If she is really straining then the vet will need to use a catheter to remove the urine.

You really should get her the vet though asap otherwise your cat could be in danger. Plus the sooner you get her there, the less cost.

Good luck and give her a get well kiss from me x

I suspect a urinary tract infection which my cat had once upon a time. The ash in cheap cat food causes crystals to form in the urine making it difficult to pass. Other symptoms may include fever or trace blood in the urine. Take him to a vet right away to confirm this. If you've caught it before it gets too bad a simple perscription will clear it up. If it goes on too long an operation might be necessary. Avoid buying the cheap cat foods even if they say "low ash". I give my cats IAMS. Sure its a little more money but it means fewer vet bills in the end.

A little while ago my cat had the same problem, he would squat but couldn't wee. After a while we took him to the vets and he had a water infection. We had to give him medicine into the mouth using a syringe (you will probably need two people for this as they try to get away). The treatment only goes on for about two weeks, but you will need to keep an eye on them to check it's working.

your cat proberbly has feline lower urinary tract disease my cat has it if it a girl cat its not as serious as a boy cats one
you need to get the cat to the vet now i was told that if you dont do something within 36 hours the cat can die .
when you take the cat the vet will unblock it and tell you that you need to make them drink more i'm trying that with my cat and it's not easy making them drink when they dont want to.
and it does come back my cat has has had this for about a month and its been back twice in the last 3 weeks .
please take your cat to the vet
good luck

My kitty had the same problem too. She occasionally gets that way from time to time. The first time it happened, I thought it was a urinary tract infection. I took her to the vet and they told me she had FUD (Feline Urinary Disorder.) They told me she had crystals forming in her urine and that we needed to get her urine acidic. I gave her like a quarter tablet of vitamin C (whatever the lowest strength from the pharmacy) and plenty of water per day and she got better. Like I said, it re-occurs from time to time for my kitty. You should definantly take her to the vet, just to see. If its the same problem, and if it happens again, you will know what to do. Be thankful your kitty is female. Males could die from FUD, but females usually do not. Good luck, hope kitty feels better soon!

Unrinary Tract Infection...crystals. Get her to a vet, and quick! She could die from this. I'm not positive that is what is happening, but you need to rule it out. And you need to find out why your cat is struggling. She is most likely in pain and is reliant upon you to help her.

You need to take her to the vet immediately to have her checked out. My cat had that problem and she had a water infection and needed a course of antibiotics but it could be more serious and the cause of underlying kidney problems. I hope she is okay.

I had a female cat with this problem once. She had urinary crystals. She was peeing blood too...I saw it in the snow....I changed her diet to low ash cat food and that cleared up the problems. I also added water to her dry cat food to give her more water to help her urine be less concentrated and less likely to form crystals.

Hi there...most likely your cat has a lower urinary tract disorder possibly a urethral blockage. The blockages can be life-threatening within 24-48 hours and requires URGENT medical attention because if the bladder is too full it will rupture into the abdominal cavity and this is toxic.
