A taser might be considered a gun that only puts people down. There are also special shotgun shells that, instead of buckshot, have a small bean bag in the shell, and is fired from a regular shotgun. In the first "Jacka$$" movie, Johnny Knoxville got shot with one.

If a situation warrants that I pull my sidearm and fire, it is a situation that warrants the use of deadly force. If it gets to that point, you do not try to wound the person, you shoot to kill. You aim center mass and fire. We do not shoot people in the leg, guns out of their hands, etc.

As far as mob dispersion, there are rubber bullets, bean bags, tear gas, tazers, etc. But, those weapons, minus the tazer, are not used in everyday policing.

Tazers are new in this area, and we don't have them. Houston PD does, and there are all kinds of issues with them. Lawsuits are through the roof.

Most recently, one of the defensive linemen from the Texans was tazed. Of course, everyone is using the issue that he is an African American, and that is why it was used. If you look at him, and given he was twice the size of the officers there, and he was getting out of line, he was rightfully tazed. He would have tossed thos guys around like they were nothing. But, had the officers not been issued tazers, he would have been shot. At least this way, he is still alive.

It won't be long before microwave guns will be in use. They extend a non lethal ultra high frequency that creates a stasis field the lingers on the skin of a perpetrator, causing a strength draining pain. It is said to be able to penetrate the thickest clothing.

Stopping power is the name of the game. The 9mm Glock will still be around for a long time.

Yes there are - they are called less-than-lethal weapons. The most effective is a taser, which fires electric darts that knock a person right down, but they are limited to about 20 feet in range. There are also bean bag guns which do not necessarily take you down, but they hurt a lot. There is also pepper spray, but it too is limited to about 10 feet of range. It may not knock you down, but it usually does.

There are stun guns that fire rubber projectiles or bean bags, however there are many situations in law enforcement where deadly force is the only option. Police aim to stop, not to wound.

There are guns in use that don't kill, including a gun that shoots beanbags. The force of the beanbag is enough to knock a grwin man down.

No, any gun which fires a projectile, even rubber bullets, has the potential to kill, or maim. The same goes for tazers, and electronic shock type guns. Many have alredy died from them.
