If you had arthritis you wouldn't want to be put down would you? Give the dog a chance and let her have the operation, she could have several years in her yet and rest assured that if the vet did not think it would be satisfactory and give her several more years he would not be recommending it. Hope you make the correct decision and that she makes a good recovery. Love to the dog.

I once had a dog that got hit by a car and his hind leg was broken which required surgery. He had to have pins put in his leg to hold the bone together. He also had a metal bar on the outside of his leg I guess the bar gave the pins more support as the bone healed. After the healing he had a limp and the leg was touchy and on the sensitive side and this never went away, but he did do very well. You should go ahead and have the surgery on your dog. If the vet thought it would be a waste of his time and your money then he would have told you. If your dog is happy as you say she is then don't give up on her. The vet must think she will recover just fine. For your dogs arthritis: Ask your vet about giving your pet Glucousamine it WORKS!! I wish your dog a speedy recovery. I believe surgery is a good option for her.

Hello: My heart goes out to you and your Spaniel. This has to be one of the hardest decisions ever. Where your dog is so old and already plagued with arthritis and just the way you phrased your question tells me you unfortunately know the answer. We had to put one dog down because of severe arthritis. The Vet gave him the needle and we stayed with him until he was gone. For us, that was the only avenue. We sure cried, but just knowing he went peacefully in our arms certainly helped. Good luck in making YOUR right decision. Peace and Love.

I have a dachshund with a pin in her leg. She has done just fine. She doesn't have arthritis but has had back problems in the past. I would go with the pin, but also ask your vet for help with the arthritis. Is there some kind of anti inflammatory for pets like there is for people?

If you didn't get her the operation you would forever be wondering what if. Once she get the broken leg sorted the vet can treat her for arthrits, there are some fantastic new medicines out there for canine arthritis. Dogs are amazing they are not like humans, they bounce back!
Hope everything goes okay!

The same thing happened to my 7 yr old GSD. Had the op. with a pin in his leg, plaster cast for 3 months. Went back to have the plaster removed but died under the anaesthetic, his heart could not go through it again, sorry to upset you, but you must be prepared for such eventuallity.
