I would definitely consult a doctor. I was told that it stops the growth plates from fully reaching their intended positions. Like the pressure pushes them backwards or something . I see no reason for a 10 yr old to need to lift weights. They're usually so active anyway, muscles are growing already. Pushups and other non-weight excercises are good. Don't put any extra strain on a young body that needs to grow.

It doesn't stunt your growth. Growth is based on cells and in no way do weights have any effect on your genetics and height. It may make you look smaller because you're bulkier, but not much more than that. I would hold off until he was 13 though just for safety sake. Make sure he can do natural body exercises really well such as pushups, situps, and tri-pushups. If weights are used wrong, he can hurt himself by straining a muscle or tendon. If he really wants to lift, get him started with free weights. Then when he gets a little older, get someone to show him how to lift weights the right and practical way to avoid injury. Also if he starts working out, nutrition is just as important. 25% fat, 40% protein, and 35% carbohydrate diet should do him well.

In my personal opinion is there a need for such a young boy to be lifting weights??? I don't think any girls at his age will care if he is buff or not...

Lifting heavy weights can stunt growth
However, encourage him to do more free weights
such as doing push ups or sit-ups
or doing pull ups and chin ups
He can get amazing results and not have any effects on growth
