Big question is why you want another dog. If you just want to keep it penned up why bother? Are you getting it from a friend or a breeder or the animal shelter? Are you getting it to keep the other dog some company because you neglect it and feel guilty or is there a specific thing you need another dog for?

Ponder these questions and they should help you decide if you even need another dog. Then define what kind of dog by what the need is.

First of all, what's the temperment of your female golden? How long have you had her? How old is she? How connected to you or anyone in the family is she? How does she do with other dogs? What kind of obedience does she know? These questions need to be answered before you can really get anyone to help you determine what breed would best suit your golden as a good companion.
What I have seen in many cases though is a family of two goldens...and when I work with dogs it seems that all goldens (especially puppies and adolecents) always play and stick together in a group of random breeds.
So if you can give me an outline of the above, I may be able to give you an idea.

What dog are you putting out with the golden retriever? Is your dog fixed, or the 'other dog?'

It depends on What kind of dog you have time for. Golden Retrievers are excellent dogs! They are very loyal companions. I would get one similar to what you actually have time for. Is your dog young? Is she middle age? Is she old? All of these things you have to consider. How long has she been the only dog?

With the jovial, carefree, all accepting personality of the golden, the dog won't care! I have boxers, my mother has goldens, and they get along great! I also had a pitbull that my moms dogs adored. They didn't care. Just be sure that the other breed is as jovial-boxer, lab, golden, Irish setter, etc.

Labs are one of those breeds that are so well tempered and loving. You could get most any dog to be a pall for her. I wouldn't suggest a small dog, simply because labs love to play and roll around, and the small one could get hurt. But with labs you are open to most any other breed.

Did you want to get the same breed or maybe a smaller breed and have one big and one little? I also wanted to ask about your golden, we are thinking about getting one but I just wanted to ask some owners about how they like them and what they dont like about them...thanks so much for your time.

My mom has a golden retriever (that I grew up with and now live next door to). When I got my English yellow lab puppy, the golden was like "You got me a puppy!!!!". She absolutely loves him, even though he likes to chew on her ears. She'll put him in his place though when he really needs it. (They even match!)

Maybe you should get a lab because they are almost the same dog. (But not a female, they might fight)
