I work in the dental profession and I love it.
The pay is good and the hours ~ well, we all know that dentist's hours are better than banker's hours!!
I thought that some of the "gross" things would bother me a lot more than they do. I guess that when you're helping care for someone, you switch into "Mom" mode and just have their best interest at heart.
I really enjoy the work.

When I was at school, I really wanted to be a medical doctor and so took all the relevant subjects. When I was 16, my dad read an article in a newspaper about the upcoming shortage of dentists and asked if I had thought about doing it.
At that time, dentists were paid a little more than doctors and I would only have to work 9-5 rather than evenings/weekends as well. The other attraction for me was that if a patient walks through the door, I generally can see what the problem is and fix it straight away rather than sitting behind a desk and having to guess at the cause of someones symptoms. E.g, how many different reasons can there be for cough? I would find it hard to work out!
At the moment very happy with career choice. Money is good - even on NHS and I think things are going to get better. Lovely not to have a boss and I can work as much or as little as I want. Total freedom and it's magic. Only down side are the patients!!

I was a receptionist for a dentist for a short time and I saw how gross it could be. If it had not been for that experience I would not take such good care of my teeth today. Peoples mouths can be really gross!
As for cosmetic surgery, I love to think I could make great money as the surgeon but I am not seeing myself getting any work done soon. But hey, Ashlee Simpson looks GREAT now. She should be the poster girl for plastic surgery.

Worked as a denal assistant for a few years. Always wanted to go further and go to school for dentistry. But, where I live makes it almost impossible. Would be a dream come true for me I guess....
Would love cosmetic surgery... I have some minor, of course, things I would love to have done... but, then again, I am who I am, and I like who I am, if anyone esle has a problem with it... They can pay for the surgery.....lol
Good luck....Trying to find a profession?

I have epilepsy, so I could not be a dentist, or chair side assistant. But I could be an extra-oral assistant in a six handed practise. I do know how to develop film, and use a dry heat sterilizer.

yes dentsists earn up to £50,000 a year, but you have to have 2 A's and 1 B atleast in A2 level and A/B in Biology and Chemistry just to get into University to study Dentistry. That is For England and Wales.

Both are good fields with great money. What is the difference if you look in a gross mouth or have to clean the butt of someone, then assist in operating rooms? Someome has to do it. We are all cut out for different vocations. Dental patients can be nice if you have a good chair side manner. No need to be abrupt with patients and please answer all their questions, not only your view counts.

Better a dentist and spend all day looking into someones mouth than be a gynocologist.
