I like JFK. and the subway runs right from the airport into the middle of Manhattan. If you pack lite, it won't be a problem.

I have flown from all 3 local airports when I was living in Manhattan and I must say that from experience, I've liked Newark Liberty Airport the most. I've never had any problems when I've flown out of there. I live in New Jersey now so it's the closest one to me anyway.

JFK is easiest to get into Manhattan from, you can take the subway from there. La Guardia or Newark you will need to take a cab or a bus from. Newark is my personal favorite, just for nostalgia reasons.

Actually if you can get a flight into Newark it is the closest to get you into the city, but the cab fare is a bit higher, but the trip much shorter. Or La Guardia is the next best. Only use a yellow cab to get into the city, don't use any of the other cabs offered. Please note that going into the city is a set fare, you will be given a card noting the rates. You do pay for any bridge or tunnel fares, they are not included. Please remember to tip the cab driver.

From Newark, you would want to take the train. Avoid the bus service especially during peak traffic times. From LaGuirdia you can take a shuttle bus for about $12 and from JFK you can take the AirTrain.
