-it uses a different strain of yeast than ales, I think it is a "bottom fermenter" as opposed to top fermenting yeast used in ales
- typically it is a lighter beer than ales

Lagers are smoother tasting. Because they are fermented colder than ales, they do not have the fruity esters that ales have. They're generally served colder than ales.
