Over the last couple of weeks this fella and I have been flirting quite a bit, accidentally touching each other, longer than normal looking into each others eyes hanging around each other more than normal. All of a sudden he has backed off. I have done nothing differently. Why? and does he fancy me or not?

maybe if this fella backed off you should give him a bit of space that's where i went wrong in the past by not letting them have that bit of space not not ring or text this fella act like you moved on keep your head up you have noting to be ashamed of if its meant to be its meant to be but in this case it was not now you know the thurth so move on with life theres plenty more fish in the sea

These things happen quite often. Its simple enough to get back to the normal things again. Talk to him. Talk to him more than you used to. Its just like an equation. Both have normal behaviour. Then when hte equation goes imbalanced, like one goes to an abnormal behaviour (like backing up) then the other should balance the equation by showing excessive of waht he/she does. If you do this, i am sure he comes back to normal. He might ask you out either.. who knows.:D

Typically you cannot know what happens in someone elses life unless you share a mojor part of it with them. He ma have liked you, and may have entered another relationship. This is speculation though. The best thing to do is to talk to this person...
