f1.4 is a much larger aperture (lens opening) than f22. It allows more light to enter the camera. So a picture shot at f22 would be much darker than a picture shot at f1.4 if the shutter speed and film speed remained constant, but you would use f1.4 if you were trying to shoot in dark conditions.

The shutter speeds indicated on your camera (30,60,125,250 etc.) are the bottom part of a fraction( 1/30,1/60,1/125,...) The "F"stops (1.4,2.8,4, 5.6,8,16.)are too!

SOoooo ... put a "1" over the top of any "F" stop number (fraction) and you will always know which opening is bigger .

1.4 is wide
22 is darker
