Only the non-Italian documents that relate to your Italian blood line are required to be translated into Italian.

For example if you are claiming from your father, grandfather, great grandfather (born in Italy)....your maternal documents -- your mother, and grandmother's birth certificates or death certificate (if necessary) would not need to be translated into Italian. The marriage certificates would need to be translated because they are the marriage certificates of your father's and grandfathers.

For a specific list of what is required, based on your individual category, see the drop down menu on this page: http://www.italiamerica.org/id72.htm

Click on the drop down menu, select the category that you fall into and based on your category the requirements specifically what documents are required, as well as what documents require translation and apostille. Next to the name of the required document you will see in parenthesis if the document must have a translation or apostille.

I went to Miami for my sigiornno, it took 15 minutes with documents written from my employer. To get permission and approved documents back is another story. All of my documents were in English, I don't know why they would want them translated. The only document I had that was in both in Italian and English was my sigiorno. The personal at the consulate spoke both languages.
