It's most likely the noise.
My son did the same thing. One day he could sit there while the vacuum was running with no problems and the next he was scared to death of it.
I think that before a certain age it just doesn't occur to them that there is anything to be afraid of.

My son was that way. He screamed from the moment it came on till the moment it stopped. I figure it was the noise, because he was also scared of the blender.

Finally, I made a game out of touching the vacuum cleaner. I started when it was off, and he'd go, run, touch it, and zip back to the "safety" of the couch. Then I started turning it on and walking away from it (so it wasn't moving), and we'd play the game again. Now, he wants to do the cleaning for me!

My nephew suddenly started doing that so my sister asked her doctor. He said at that age its common to start being afraid of things like that, he was also afraid of the garbage disposer. Its the noise and yes they will out grow it.

buy him a toy one! that helped my daughter...then i bought her a mini one that is meant for kids that actually works..and I don't remember the last time she let me vacuum...she does all of it now..and shes 3..lol
