Armies are just that, not police forces. You are right, but, there will many who say your wrong.

An Army cannot fight against a Civilian Rebellion effectively.
Revolutionary War of the Americas is a good example of that. Before Gen. Washington was elected President he was an insurgent.
Before Mr. Franklin signed that document he was an insurgent.
The Vietnamese were insurgents, they won.
We were founded by insurgents we should know better.
Killing woman and children does not make for good press coverage.
Soldiers are trained to fight a war, not a civilian revolt. If they want that country to be slaves and worship flying donkeys, ok, they are free to do so. It is not the place of a US Soldier to tell them what Government,Religion or Animal Cookies is best for them.

It's not training. Compare this to the "war on drugs". We can't win becuase we can't attack at the source. In the case of drugs, we can't attack any number of nations importing narcotics. This "insurgency" is the same thing. An insurgent is a PC name for enemy soldier. Most of the insurgents are trained militia and regular army from countries like Syria and Iran. They just leave the uniform at home. Since patrolling all of Iraq's borders is impossible with the amount of troops we have, enemy soldiers will just walk in. If we treat this like a board game, we attack Iran and Syria and the insurgency will disappear.
Unfortunately, this is not a board game. The political backlash the US would suffer from invading Iran and Syria would be severe. We would be condemned by the world. I would actually be ok with this if we were politically stronger internally and had the right leadership in place. We have neither of those. If we stay the course, this is just the "war on drugs"...it'll never be won.

This is a fight, unfortunately, the U.S. military cannot win. Every soldier in uniform is a painted target. Every insurgent is a civilian until a split second when he kills and returns a civilian. Troops are not allowed to engage civilians until they attack first, giving insurgents a clear and superior advantage, and sometimes with very deadly consequences. The insurgents will always have the edge - able to strike our soldiers at anytime. Think about this.
The amount of dead and wounded U.S troops is about 25,000 - ironically, the same amount needed for the surge.
The U.S. militarily needs clandestine non-uniformed special ops for this - otherwise, just expect more body bags.

Ok people...
We are doing exactly what our training entails. We degrade, demoralize, and kill our enemy. Yes, there are a lot of illegal combatants coming in from all over. And I as a soldier have no problem with that, as long as our special operations folks are allowed to continue to run counter-insurgency (COIN) operations, and they are the best in the business at that.
What kills me is just about every tom, dick, and harry, who have never even served a day in their life, seems to think they know more about waging war, strategy, and tactics, than the people whose jobs and expertise it is to perform. That is our function, and our profession to find the best solutions given the circumstances, and I am tired of all the monday morning quarterbacking that the media and politicians and even people here are doing. If we are being defeated, its not by our enemies, because they are dying for their cause in droves. It is by the people within our government and domestically who don't have a clue about our jobs, let alone how to prosecute an operation. We are doing the job, and doing it much better than the history of warfare would have allowed for. As regrettable as the figures are, we havn't lost that many soldiers, in fact more people will be murderd in one year in DC than we have lost in the entire war. Think about that people, and be rational! We are doing things much better than any army in the history of the world has ever done, and I am for one, proud of that. People need to get over their ignorance for what we do, and just trust that we will continue to be the professionals that we are.

since the insurgents are coming in from the outside (both bodies and funding), until we stop the source, the insurgency will continue.
a little bit of trust in the military would go a long way - and maybe opening up the war to the military planners to allow them to do what they have to to end the fighting, including killing people in large numbers or in areas that are politically "off-limits".

Yes and I believe it is anti-Americans that are saying that.
The US is the most powerful nation in the world. We've
won so many wars in the past, and we could also win
this one, especially if the real Americans would get behind
out President, the troops, and this war and quit listening
to all the rubbish from liberal anti Americans who want us
to lose.

Its mostly the left that continue to see our soldiers as failures as they see the military as failures.Look at Clinton,he dimished our armed forces terribly and the President had to work with a skeleton military because of him.History shows that the left feel war is wrong and defending our country is wrong. That is why vietnam failed, because the politicians failed the men and women who fought to help others. As long as they keep sucking up the political correctness crap and not grow a spine to defend this country,we will never win a war.China just sits back and waits.

Yes, but the problem comes from the top. We have to face the fact that Bush and co. are the main problem here, they are ruining our GOP and we need to sacrifice them to right the ship.
