You have to become a permanent resident first. You can apply for that by an employer sponsoring you. altough they are hard to get nowadays, unless you are in healthcare. You can also be petitioned for by a fiance(e) or spouse. The whole process takes a few months to get in, 3-4 months for a work permit and another 4-5 months for the Green Card. That is how I got here.

If you have a million bucks you could start a business in the US and employ US citizens or legal residents.

As you are a British citizen, asylum is not an option. At least not yet. Neither is the "Green Card Lottery" unless you are living in Northern Ireland. That is because countries which send more than a certain number of immigrants do not get any slots. It is highly unlikely that the UK mainland will qualify for any slots for a long time.

You can visit America without a visa, but if you plan to stay and become a citizen, you need a visa. These are really hard to get right now, thanks to the idiot in the White House. But, what ever you do, don't overstay a student or other visa, as they can bar you from the US for 10 years or more. The process takes about 5 years, and you need to apply to the State department. Go to this website, and good luck to you. You'll need it...lol Oh, keep your British passport as well. Apply for dual citizenship, though I think technically the British aren't citizens, but subjects. Same difference in this case.
