CSF bathes the brain and spinal cord. Any infection in the nervous system will be present in the CSF so it is important to run tests on it.
Sometimes, there are partial blocks to the flow of CSF by tumor or swelling inside the nerve tissue and sometimes there is high pressure due to swelling from any cause - so the opening pressure of the CSF flow will give you a fair idea what you are dealing with.
There is a condition called sub arachnoid hemorrhage - bleeding within the coverings of the brain - here the CSF will be red tinged in all the samples that you collect.

Meningitis that is inflammation of coverings of the brain can be diagnosed by CSF. since this fluid bathes the brain and spinal cord any infection to these organs can be diagnosed fast and treated fast. or else it will be life treatining.
