The Bible says that God's ways are not man's ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts. He is a separate entity in my opinion. "Me and my father are one" seems to me to mean they were one in the sense that there is also one "mankind".

We all have a relationship with God, but that relationship is like the sun reflecting in the mirror. God's light reflects in the mirrors of our hearts. However, our mirrors are not pure and perfect, so the reflection depends upon our ability to refine our characters. Jesus was a Perfect Mirror of God, so in Him we could see God.

The Essence of God, however, is unattainable. We can only know God through a Perfect Mirror such as Jesus, just as we cannot attain unto the sun itself. God created both us and Jesus Christ.
