They are content when they do this. She likes to be as close to you as possible. It is cute when my cat does this, but it can hurt. (wear gloves) I do sometimes.

Cat Stretching Paws

Both my cats have the habit that if I am in bed or sitting at my computer they'll cry to get my attention then stretch up their front paws on the desk or my bed so they are standing, then reach one single paw towards my face but never touching me. It is the cutest thing but I wonder why they do it.

Why do humans stretch? Because it feels good!

This action is called "kneading" and is a behavior that some cats retain from kittenhood. This is the action that kittens do to their mothers when they are suckling milk. Cats are very content when they are kneading with their paws and you should be honored that she feels that way when you are holding her. She feels safe with her human "mother".

A tip if you don't want it to hurt: clip her nails or take her to a groomer to get them done. It makes the "hand-holding" more enjoyable to a human. :)

I will take your advice and answer!

I have heard that they have scent glands in between their paws. By stretching them they are marking objects with their scent. That is why they claw at scratching posts and other objects.
