My Dad always used to call Gherkins, Wallies. Why did he call them that? Was Wallies a brand at some point?

i call them pickles...Wallies is probably a brand at some point...like asthma relievers...my mom calls them ventolin but the real name's like Salamol inhaler or something...cuz ventolin was a brand name at one point...but it is still widely recognised by doctors around the world...
