I scan my computer at least 1-3 times a week with both..Should I waste money buying software I can use for free? I have a laptop also with this set up should I buy the seperate software for it also or not?

A useful link from "I am not a geek".com

http://articles.networktechs.com/spyware.php

There is a plethora of useful information and free stuff that's very good.

You might also want to search that site for "What's Running" ... it's a little tough to do for the faint of heart, but I can 'talk you down' via IM ... You know where I live, this account is for YA only.

I prefer "Spybot" search and destroy. It's available for free, but a subscription will cost about $10 a year ... well worth it. It's the best there is and dirt cheap too. Doesn't interfere with Norton and picks up all the crap that Norton misses.

You can check out Spybot Search and Destroy here:

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

For adware, check out Lavasoft's Ad-Aware -- free trial, but the subscription will cost about $50 a year ... again, well worth the cost.

You can try/buy Ad-Aware at:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

With Norton Internet Security (and regular upgrades), Spybot and Ad-Aware ... you'll be very safe and your computer will love you !

General Tip: Never rely on Automatic Updates of anything. You should do this, however, don't expect it to always work.

Think about it this way (advice from a serious hacker, here) ... what do you think would be the first thing I would do to your computer ?

Answer: Turn off your auto-updates so that I can rape your machine as I see fit.

Keep auto-updates turned on, but do them manually once a month or so (or whenever you hit the internet hard or visit 'questionable' sites).

Manually checking for updates of virus definitions (Norton, Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc.) will help you find out if things have been turned off without your knowledge.

I also suggest that you visit Microsoft.com (assuming you're running a PC and not Mac-Crap here) and do a manual update of your system as well. Upgrade to the latest Media Player too. Version 10 is a lot more secure than 9.

I hope this helps.

You should update both, trust me it's worth it. Without updated spyware software and antiviruses, you risk:
-Slower (much slower) computer
-Possible Identity theft
-Serious computer problems (it has happened before, I.E. crashing, etc.)

Update it every now and then, if possible. If it protects you and your computer, it's not a waste. Scan all of your downloads, and the latest versions of Norton will tell you if a downloaded file contains a trojan horse if it can identify it. I hope I helped!

If you run two or more anti virus programs at the same time they can conflict with each other, which is almost as bad as a virus.

The thing that you should do is get a mac laptop. It cannot get viruses. so there is no need to have to buy those programs.

Hope this helps!
