The answer is complex. There is very little difference...if you want to be green get a smaller car or buy a push bike.
Basically when you make a burnable fuel from crude oil you make petrol and diesel. You cannot have one without the other....so we have to use both.
Thermodynamically, the diesel cycle is more fuel efficient but historically has had a smoke pollution problem.
Modern diesel vehicles are more fuel efficient and arguably greener than equivalent petrol engines due to particulate filters and improved fuel injection technologies. Hence there are more on our roads than ever before. However, they do have a lot of additional technology compared to the petrol engine and are more expensive.
Some people say that if we spent the same money on additional technologies for a petrol engine it would be the greener solution.
By law, every few years the amount of pollution allowed from an engine reduces. The petrol and diesel engine have to evolve to reach these new limits and so the present dominance of diesel may not always continue.

Diesel, especially when applied to automobiles. Modern diesel cars are much more efficient and thus release significantly lower amounts of various pollutants and CO2. These new designs, coupled with improved diesel fuel quality, have solved many of the issues with diesel powered cars including poor performance, soot, noise and odor.
The current Audi race car, the R10 is a diesel and is dominating its class.

Diesel, - the combustion is far more complete which is why you get more miles per gallon and less emissions.
