I just heard in california there working on a law that if you spank a child under the age of four, you can get a 10,000 fine and one year in jail. What are your thoughts on this? So would you threaten your child like this" Now Kathy do you want a 10,000 spanking?" Instead of," You better stop that or your not going to get a happy meal"

My brothers and I got spanked only when our misbehavior was potentially dangerous--e.g. Mom said not to run into the street, we did and did not get hit by a car (but could have). Mom only did that to let us know she meant it when she said NOT to do something that could have killed us. My brothers and I ended up normal, healthy and well-adjusted adults.

Personally, I think that parenting styles have swung so far from one end of the spectrum to another that it is hard for people to actually discipline their children for fear that someone will call the police if they do. Regardless of whether they actually hit their child or not. It really started with my generation being told about inappropriate contact with adults when all sorts of kids were getting abducted in the 1980's. Then all sorts of laws came into play where teachers and health care professionals were required to report any suspicion of abuse. Then teachers started losing their jobs for not reporting enough of the incidents that could've been preventable because they thought one bruise did not constitute abuse. Then parents started getting reported for nothing. Then people stopped disciplining their children altogether because the CHILDREN threatened to call the authorities for a grounding. Viscious cycle.

Now we have all sorts of people in my generation having children of their own who REALLY want them to have to benefit of being disciplined. Not all lessons can be taught by a "time-out."

My suggestion is to move to Florida. Spanking your child is not illegal here. As long as you don't use excessive force against a child you can even swat them in public if need be and people can't say anything about it.

I don't think spanking is ok in any circumstance, I find it abusive on every level. Yes I do have children and they are very respectful children. Studies have shown that spanking does not work but, some still insist on their way of raising their children. I think people should show their kids more love and less hitting. I was spanked a lot growing up and I resented it and It wasn't even deserved so I swore to myself that if I ever had children I would never lay a hand on them unless I was going to give them a hug.I agree with the law and I hope it passes.

I use spanking as one of many forms of punishment. Its not something I do daily, but I don't like the idea of government taking my options away. I think its too intrusive to start making rules like this. Too many children are no longer spanked. Kids didn't shoot other kids in school and threaten to have their parents jailed 30 years ago. I think parents need to learn how to parent, instead of worrying about the next stupid law a government official can come up with.
At 2, there were many times I would pop my child on the hand to discipline. Its not possible to reason with a toddler. Moving her and redirection didn't work. Nor did telling her no. She'd smile prettily at me, and do it again. Was I supposed to let her pull the lamp down on herself?A few pops on the hand (with a stern "No") and she learned that pulling on the lamp was bad. Only after she got older could she understand enough to realize how dangerous her toddlerhood actions were.

Spanking doesn't teach anything good to a child, except that it's ok to hit in certain circumstances. I don't spank my kids because I don't want them to hit, period. There many alternatives that fall in-between those two threats.
