HALAL ... means any thing permited or allowed to be done in islam by god ... for example .. in foods if a food is HALAL that means it's allowed to eat this kind of food " like the word KOSHER in jwism" and that's goes for most of foods exept for example the PORK meat cause it's HARAM which means forbeden or not allowed and wine and alchol is also HARAM .... in other matters than food .... men and women ""relations"" before marrige is HARAM for sure ..but after marrige it's HALAL ... ... stealing or kiling with no right or doing adultry etc ... is HARAM ...

HALAL is an arabic word meaning "ALLOWED"
it is opposite of "HARAM" that is something not allowed...
like every religion, Islam has also put some restrictions to its followers to judge their commitment to their religion and differentiate sinners from non-sinners..
for example alcohol, pork and meat of some other animals (carnivorous) is "HARAM" in Islam.... but the meat of cow, goat, chicken is "HALAL" privded it is slaughtered only with the name of Allah...
there is nothing fundamentalist about it... its just a ay to pick the true followers... and making sure to restrain from HARAM things and following the HALAL things does not make your life at all difficult...

halal is more or less the things, muslims are permitted to do, and haram is things muslims aren't permitted to do. You could say it is halal to eat chicken, but haram to eat pork
