The best way to learn a subject is to teach a subject - see if you can get a group of friends together and form a study group.

Good Luck!!!

Every student can run into different barriers to achieving better grades, but few are honest enough to admit they have a problem, and fewer still are earnest enough and have the wisdom to really want to do something about it..

So far I'm giving you "A+'s"' for:

1. Honesty in confronting the problem.
2. Recognizing that you have the problem to solve - and no one is plotting against you, or the course work is stupid, or what your being taught has to value in later life.
3. Electing not to just memorize a buch of factoids, puke them out on a test, and them promptly forget them, and move on the the next set of data to be temprarily commited to memory and then parroted back at exam time
4. Seeking help from others to find a solution to your in such a way that you can learn, while improving your GPA.
5. Not loking for a way to cheat your way through or "beat the system".

At this point you are "scoring" better that about 90 % of the adult workforce.

That said let's review some physical and psycological cause & effect issues:

a. Do you get at least 8 - 9 hours of actual sleep every night? (Not "On average" - I mean every night) - based on a set bed time and a set time for rising each morning. if not start.today. ( You need to start "disciplining" your mind and body in all aspects - so that school work alone is not singled out - making it drudgery). If you use an alarm clock and it has a "snooze" feature - put it away - and buy a cheap alarm clock with only a LOUD alarm, and NO snooze feature. DO NOT put the alarm clock near the bed. if you have you own bath - put it in the shower - where the acoustics will help modify the ringing of the bell - but the idea is to get up and get moving.

b, Do you snore? Ask others in house hold if the answer is a resounding "YES", and you are tired a lot during the day, and usually wake up as tired as you went to bed, you maye suffering from sleep apnea, a sleep disorder which is treatable with machine-assisted respitory equipment, (C-PAP or BiPAP), or depending on the Doctor's reccomendation, - Bronchial surgery.

c. Have you ever had your IQ tested? (I do not even know if they do that anymore these days). But I'd check with your school counselor- do they still have those? And be tested. A kid I grew up with had some similar problems in grade school - they though he was retarded because he was'nt interested in the course work, and was often disruptive, and skipped a lot of days - he just did not go inside - hejust went and played instead. Anyway, when they go around to doing an IQ test, it turned out he was running hot - 142 - which is genius level, and that he was just bored to death. Problem was, when tested again, and again, he tested right out of a 4 University, and a 4 year Business Degree at the State University, but I still needed the socialization skills that only my own age group could provide. The compromise was that I would stay with my grade - and go thru the gradesuntil I finished high school, in the meantime, using grants I could finish college, and pick up however many masters and doctorate degrees I chose, - or not. So perhaps you too are just bored with the work because your too intelligent, - you never know, - until you get tested.

d. You say that you currently are getting A's & B's - what are the courses that you are getting the B's in? The Humanities? Social Studies? Languages? Math ? The Sciences? By chance does the same teacher teach the same classes that you are having trouble in? Could the problem be a personality clash between you and the instructor - and not the course work - or your performnce?

If you are having trouble with the Social Sciences, or American or World History it could be due to the fact that you are learning the history of the ottoman empire or the American Revolution in out of context snippets. All to often teachers , forget, or decline not to do an overview of what the course work is going to cover, - the "BIG PICTURE", if you will, knowing this , gives reference to the chapters you study separately.

e. "Teach" your course work to someone else. One of the reason why "Study" groups are so effective a study tool is that people can "split up" the work, with each student focusing on one aspect of the work. But perhaps the most effective means I've ever found to enhance my ability to learn on my own is to "Teach" the coursework I am studying to another class mate, or even an infant who isn't sleeping well - and it's 3:00 AM in the morning before the day of the test.

f. Of course there are "Cliff" notes that pretty much cover everything it seems - which can be a lot of help.

g. THere are also 'Tutors - whiz kids from you class, or even local college kids who for $ 15 or $ 20 @ hour will help you become a star in whatever course he is having trouble in. (Most advertise that they can ing your GPA up a full Grade in just one Semester.).

6. Where are you studing?, What are the surroundings? I see some students "studing" in their rooms - music is blaring, they are sprawled out accross the bed, over an open text boox, the TV is on, and they are talking on the cell phone. I wonder how much comprehension they have of what they are "studying" so hard.

For years there were traditionally two places for kids to do their studies after school. One was the local public Library, the other was the kitchen table, now days a third legit location would be the home PC station, or at a desk or in a comfortable chair with a lap top.. There should be good lighting, it should be quiet with no distractions, no TV or Video games, no phones, no I-pod, Mp3 players, - just you, your study materials and time ti review.

7. Last resort? Last resorts are the Professional Learning centers like Wislon Learing Center and Sylvan Learning Centers

Good Luck. I'm Pulling for you.

Maybe you could recite it a couple of times, and then take a break. (The break should be about an hour, tops. You know, to eat, watch TV, play video games, surf the web, hang out, etc.) And then see if you still remember it. Or before you go to bed, try to recall it, so that way it will stay with you when you sleep. Hopefully I helped a little. Good luck getting all A's!

write it down/draw diagrams/stick postits inside cupboards

it sounds obvious, but the best way to remember a list of facts about something is to ACTUALLY understand the whole topic, that way, you dont have to memorise phrases word for word, which is a waste of 'brain space'. by doing this all those facts are obvious, and just fall into place in your mind.
