The split happened back in the formation of Islam, after the death of Muhammed.

The Sunnis are the largest sect of Muslims, and represent the branch of Islam that came through the caliphate, which started with Abu Bakr.

The Shi'a (the proper term, that American's have dubbed Shiite) are the next largest sect, constituting around 10% of Muslims. They believe that Ali was the rightful caliph, and believe that he was murdered as a result of a fight over who should be the leader of the Muslims after the Prophet died.

No shias do no longer worship some guy. i'm Sunni myself yet i am going to attempt to describe this to the finest of my skills. Shia and Sunni do have opposing perspectives notwithstanding it isn't depending on faith. The conflict is grounded in a political adventure/result. Shias trust that the Prophet Muhammad pbuh appointed his nephew Haz. Ali as his successor to develop into caliph yet Sunnis carry that because the caliphate become chosen by technique of Iman and aspect of taqwa that Haz. Abu Bakr Siddiq become correct chosen. Sunnis evaluate Ali the fourth and extremely last of the Rashidun (rightly guided Caliphs), at the same time as Shias regard Ali because the first Imam and evaluate him and his descendants the rightful successors to Muhammad, all of that are individuals of the Ahl al-Bayt, the kinfolk of Muhammad. This conflict of words chop up the Ummah (Muslim community) into the Sunni and Shia branches. a number of Sunni and shia practices fluctuate from one yet another, in that the approaches are somewhat diverse yet actually an same. wish that clarified it somewhat. And to any Shia who chanced on a hollow or a mistake in my rationalization, i'm sorry. I defined it to the finest of my expertise.

Sunnies are those who followed the track of the first 4 khalifes and those who followed them later on and believe that the Holly Quran and the sayings of the Prophet PB UH narrated by all the followers of the prophet PB UH are correct .
----------------------------
Shite believe in Prophet Mohammad PB UH but believe that the first three Khalif's are non Muslims and they went back to paganism and the ALI the fourth Khalif should be the first one after the prophet and MOST ( at least) 99% of the Prophets followers has returned to Paganism, as well most of his wives also, they believe the sayings of the prophets are not correct.
And a lot of ideas which clearly contradict the believe of what most Muslim believe including the basics of ISLAM.
-----------------------
Also, they believe that the Holly Quran is not correct and not complete .

Also, some of them believe that the Gabriel should bring the message of prophecy to Ali instead of Mohammad.

From what I rmbr in my studies, I was going to convert but my ex left me, he was Shia..
Sunnis >they do not believe an Imam has to be a decendant from Muhammad..
Shia>believe that an Imam HAS to be from Mhmd.BUT one of his decendants did not produce an heir! so now it is believed that the next leader is a blind man...the guy mentioned below...but others feel he is NOT the one.

Remember this is only from my readings, I am hoping a Muslim will answer your question more completely than mine..
