An "Upgrade Version" is not a full version of the software. You must have a previous version installed to install the upgrade. If you have "Microsoft Office XP Upgrade" you would need to have "Office 2000" already installed on your computer to upgrade to XP.
Do not confuse this with the Microsoft Updates on the internet. These are completely different as these are fixes to a version of windows or office that Microsoft released and then found problems with.

It basically means that unless you own the licence for the original version; and the Microsoft software WILL search your computer for the original, it will not install the newer version. If you have a dodgy copy of say Microsoft Office XP/2000 and purchase the Office 2003 upgrade, it will tell you that your original licence cannot be upgraded.

An upgrade is a later edition with new items etc. This is frequently used to install newer and faster programs, not just fixes.
That is why you have to pay for some upgrades.
An upgrade is say from windows 98 to windows XP

An upgrade costs lesser than the full product and builds on the software that is already on your system. for example, if you but an upgrade version of office 2003, you should have office xp/20002 on your system in order to install it.

A newer edition that "fixes" old bugs, and replaces with new bugs.
