They constantly load up these updates and say that they're ready for me to install them to my computer. Should I disable auto updates?

Updates are necessary/essential.
.If you want you can disable this facility,
but do updates once a month.
You can choose which update/s you want..

If you use a legal copy of Windows XP, you need all the updates. You don't necessarily have to have automatic updates on, but you should install what has been downloaded. I keep mine set to notify me when downloads are ready, then I choose when to download and install them. There are several choices, choose the one most convenient for you. But your computer does need the updates, believe me. All except for Internet Explorer 7. That may come in as an automatic update. I let it get by me, and ended up having to uninstall it because it still has too many bugs to run right.

Well, in fact I think its up to you to decide....Its a matter of personal choice. For instance, I have personally disabled it. If you also want to do so, here are the steps:

Go to Control Panel.
Go to System.
Click on the Automatic Updates tab
Under the "Notification Settings" choose: " Turn off automatic updates......"

Click on OK.

You don't need to have automatic updates on, but you must go to the Windows Update website frequently to check for and install security patches and updates if you have it off.

They might be a lil irritating cos they ask you to restart after every download, but its a necessary evil.

As an alternative you can set a personal alarm to check for updates yourself bi-weekly or once a month on the windows update site.
