The black stump is actually a real landmark in Blackall, Queensland. Surveryors used it as a reference point. Anything that is referred to as 'beyond the black stump' is a long distance away.

The others are right. In addition, many many years ago people didn't travel far so the Black Stump was the last known landmark (anything beyond that was probably burned). There was no reason to go beyond the black stump so when we say somwhere is "beyond the black stump " it just means that it's a long, long way away.

BEYOND THE BLACK STUMP... Its an ozzie term that usually means something or somewhere is in a remote place or area, far removed from local populations. Out the 'back-o-bourke' is another one. Out 'woop woop' is the funniest one ive heard.
