We are about to inherit two dogs, one pitbull/boxer mix 12 years old and the other one a jack russel almost a year old. We have a three year old house cat. The pitbull/boxer hates cats! My cat just ignores dogs when he sees them. But now they are going to have to live together. Please help. I want them to get along and not kill each other.

Well, i would watch them really carefully. But if the cat can get away from the dog that's good. But make sure your cat has claws becasue he will use them and he will use his teeth too. But if this dog is really big. you might have to make other arangments. that is just what i think. But the pitbull is the one i would worry about. The russel i wouldn't worrie they don't get to big. plus he is still young and the cat will teach him to leave him alone. Still i would just be carefull with both. becasue the cat will not exspect them to bug him. Good Luck. But please, use your jugdement. you know your cat and how the dogs act. Hope i was of some help.

Be consistent (well, as much as you can be!) Your job is to convince your dogs that it's much, much more rewarding for them to not chase the cats. Feed them for staying next to you (your pit/boxer may need to be on leash at first - when he tries to leave you to go chase the cat, quickly step on the leash to stop that. As soon as he turns back to you, give him a big handful of treats!) Repeat this as often as you can, and when your cat isn't around, play recall games with your dogs. This is an intense way to get the behaviors that you want, but it'll be much less frustrating for you and your dogs if you can get them to look at you when they see the cat, in the hopes that they've earned a treat!

they usually work things out themselves,, just make sure your pit doesnt corner the cat so it cannot get away
