Can anyone give me a list of colors (along with a variety of shades, hues, tints, etc.) or a website that lists them? This is for a scene in my novel when I'm describing different reds, oranges, yellows, and black. I tried a Google search. But all I got was art supplies websites. Thanks.

The names of colors I am giving are derived from Grumbacher Academy-Brand oil paints. They are Zinc White, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light Hue, Cadmium Red Medium Hue, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Cadmium Yellow Medium and Cobalt Blue. For more information, please refer to the Dick Blick website.

I have always done watercolor. If the cost worries you about the watercolor paper then do as I do and buy wallpaper liner and paint on that. I tried it some years ago and the art is holding up just fine. I get the rolls from home depot. About $13.00 a roll. It is cotton based and is french made and comes out of Canada. You can make VERY big pictures ,LOL. and if you don't like it it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to toss it. Happy painting to you. I also do gourds ...( have 5 I'll work on soon. I have done high fire clay work but am unable to lift the 25 # bags and I have no kiln. Oil is fun and the art piece is developed in the reverse order as watercolor. If you have a Jr. college start there.

http://www.multimediaarts.com/watercolors/colrhist.htm

This site compares historical to modern colors. You also may want to check out the art supplies websites since they have a lot of descriptions of colors and history on the colors. The web site above breaks the colors down by red, blue, etc. and has the information on "Madder" which is the very old red used up until 1864 I think when Alizarin Crimson was man made.
