As a police officer, I get complained on, degraded, ridiculed, etc just for doing my job. I understand there are a lot of people out there, mostly criminals that hate me and my peers. These are the ones this queston is meant for. Why do you hate me us so much, yet when you need the police, you still call. I went to a call today where I had to take a person to jail on a warrant charging him with theft over $500 less than $1500. All I got from him was lip and smak talk. Almost open threats. He made bail a few hours later and was back on the streets. Later in the night I get a call to the same house for a burglary. The same guy I had just arrested is my complainant. Whlie he was out (In jail for theft), someone broke into his house and took his wide screen tv. Now hes my best friend. Even stating how we don't get paid enough and saying he is glad I wear the uniform, because he know he could not do it. If you hate us why call us? If you know we help, then why treat us the way you do?

Thanks to everyone who responded to this question. I have a few updates based on the answers I received.

I love my job and as of yet m not counting down the days to retierment.

I ask questions like this to get a response out of those that hate the police. So far in all the questions I have posted, none of the people it is directed at have taken the bait.

I look in yahoo answeres all the time and see questions slamming the police, but when I ask a question, none of them step up. Instead I get answers from honest citizens showing their support. Thank you!!! It reaffirms my belief that society as a whole likes the job we do and respects the challanges we face.

I guess all those who hate the police are as I suspected........cowards.

I am going to extend this question a little longer.

There's an old saying: "Nobody loves a soldier until the enemy is at the gates." Applies equally well to police as well.

My neighbour and a lot of my ex army mates are cops and they're normal people like everybody else.

I hope that clown's report gets "lost" in the system.

I think it depends on the county where you work and the neighborhoods you work in, the reputation the department has as a whole, and attitude. I've personally known a lot of cops. Some were good, some were just plain jerks. Some worked hard at improving relations with citizens, some worked hard to destroy it and felt because they wore a gun they could do anything they wanted to do. One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. My landlord was a homicide cop in a high crime area of the city. He saw a lot more than he would have liked to have seen and I'm sure he began to wonder about all people, but, as a citizen, he was the kindest, sweetest man you could ever meet. The department for which he worked had a horrible reputation for flaunting authority and abusing people and bragged about it. Should he have been judged solely because of the reputation of others? No, but it does happen. I am a law abiding citizen, but the county I now live in has a reputation for doing nothing, and I've seen that. But, who else can we call when there is a problem? I'm sure there are some good cops in the department, but when you've only met the jerks, you form your own opinion. I got a ticket for having no insurance on my vehicle, even though I had shown the cop proof of valid insurance. When it went before the judge, of course it was thrown out. But, there were 5 others in there that the cop had done the very same thing to. My opinion went down quite a few notches. Another problem is, the judges have become very lenient. A police officer will go out, work hard and make a good arrest and the judge will through it out of court or give the crook a light sentence. Makes the community think the police aren't doing their jobs. I don't think your question can be answered in just a small amount of space and do it justice. Why did the guy become your friend all of a sudden? I'm sure you are smart enough to know that he is b.s'ing you. In a way, being a cop is like a customer service job. The people call in a yell at the person answering the phone. The rep represents the company. The person calling is not yelling at that rep herself, but at the company. When you arrest someone, it isn't personal unless you let it become personal. You represent authority and you took the authority the crook felt they had away from him/her.

I had to laugh at a question I just saw about police officers.I am a truck driver and have the upmost respect for you officers.Every day your life is on the line and even more so with the gangs and todays youths having no respect for human life.

Criminals are typical scum that like to live off taxpayers money. Most dont have an education, most grew up in an atmosphere where again theres no respect for human life, much less for authority. They can sit in prison with free room and board and have the easy life of watching television, getting beefed up with weights to overpower the guards, get on the internet and continue to exhaust all of their appeals, again with tax payers money.Thats why our prison systems have become a joke to criminals and the judicial system is just as much a joke.Child rapists getting 4 year sentences, yet a bag of dope is a felony. No,I dont support or use drugs, but theres something wrong with that picture.I thank you for all that you do for us,and for being the first at the scene when help is needed.God Bless all of our officers.

First of all in all occuptions, there are lemons. And that is just a fact of every profession. The fact that we have to call you is, that is the way our society does things. Now, when a police officer has to deal with a lot and that is your choice, not anyone else's. If you don't like the people you have to deal with, get a desk job. There have been a few times in mylife I had to deal with PO's and I was not pleased with the results. My daughter was obducted when she was four months old by her biological father which now is in Michigan State Pen, serving a life sentence for Murder II. And no one would look for her, the reason - that I was not breast feeding her. I had a court order and that made no difference. Sorry, mamn. Do I even trust any police officers? Not many. I live in southern oklahoma where the cops are the law and they will tell you that. And they are so above the law, that the police chief, drives his truck around with no plates on. He thinks he doesn't have to obey the law. How can anyone respect that kind of thinking? I don't - and I have dealt with things with my 16 year old daughter that is currently in a bootcamp in Texas for her behavior. She demolished her room, hit me twice and all I got was we can't see any phsyical damage to you. So, sorry. She is your problem. I have no reason to call them - when I get that type of response. I just handled it myself. So, bottom line - I will never, ever call them for anything, not even if I'm laying on the floor dieing. And that is my choice and I don't have much respect for the enforcers of the law, when they can't even abide by the law themselves. Ain't it great to be an American?

I am not one who hates those who are hired to enforce law.

Relations between the people and law enforcement really need to improve. It reads like you are a pretty cool officer but it is often that when I start a conversation with an officer at the local donut shoppe, he or she in response would either walk away, turn their heads or start asking me personal questions. It is very important and makes sense for police to improve relations, like having community events together so that a bridge is connected and both parties are not alienated from each.

Sorry, brother, unfortunately, this is the job you signed on for. Get used to it, it doesn't get any better. As the years drag on you will probably become more and more soured on society. Remeber, people only call us for the jobs they don't want to do themselves. As for your poor complaining suspect, isn't it odd that a thief is calling to report a theft ! You know what they say, what go around comes around. I am not going to lie to you and tell you that you will like this job more as time goes on-ask yourself how many years to a minimal retirement, then consider moving on to a whole new career. I have 3 years to go ! wish me luck

That's hilarious! While he was in jail for theft he got robbed? Oh, what wonderful irony. How did you manage to keep a straight face? That whole thing would have made my day complete.

Several of my relatives are police. They sometimes get bitter too. Don't let it get you down. The majority respect you and appreciate what you do.

Unfortunately, because of your profession, you usually meet the dregs of our society. Some people think it's cool to "dis" the police.
Those of us who do not break laws usually do not come into contact with the police, on official business.
I always respect police officers, even when they incorrectly give me traffic tickets. The time for airing grievances is traffic court, not in the street.
Yours is a tough job, but someone has to do it. Thank you for your service.

All I can tell you is keep up the good work, I am a law abiding citizen that has a concealed weapons permit, I feel that I would rather be an armed citizen rather than a subject, and take a pro active stands to protect my family. Again the job you do is appreciated by me and the many like me. So thank you for your fine work, and keep us safe.

Your position certainly puts you on the front lines with the creeps. They just happen to have freedom of speech, too. But hey, you know who is right. Your job certainly isn't easy, and you really need to realize 99% of the people are behind you 100%.

I think your best buddy got what he had coming to him. That was a great story!!
