at 15 your dog sounds like it is just to old to hold its body functions any more, just like old people things just wear out , the dog does not want to do that and probly just as confused as you about it if this dog has been a trusted a loyal friend to you for 15 years, why not do that right thing and not let it suffer through last grueling stages of dying. it is called death with dignity, its hard to give up a freind of that many years but its harder to watch them lose thier quallity of life, My oppion take the dog to the vet and hold the dog in your arms, and say goodby the pain free way. my heart goes out to you, our pets never live long enough

As a dog groomer and rescuer for many years, I have heard this before. As a dog ages they just can't hold it for more than about 4 hours. Things to check on, take a stool sample to the vet to rule out any parasites. Coccidiosis is common for dogs who like to go out and pick up rabbit poop. Also are you feeding a lower protein senior dog formula, such as Iams less active. An older dog cannot handle the higher protein of a regular dog food, they really need a senior formula. When are you feeding your dog. You shouldn't let them have a full bowl to eat whenever they want. They sould be fed once a day, and in this case I would recommend in the early morning, when you can let it out to do its duty before you leave the house. If its used to eating in the evening, I would split the meal in two. If you are feeding a premium dog food, about 2 cups of dry is all they need. Are you feeding table scraps? As a dog ages they cannot tolerate greasy foods any more than an aging human. I am available to answer any questions. I am not a vet, but have lots of experience with many, many dogs!

I'd suggest going back to treating the dog as a puppy again in the same way that old people go back to wearing diapers. Get yourself some big Weewee type pads and let the dog know that that is an OK place to poo in the house.
Unless the dog is in pain, no reason to put it down due to "old age" like everyone is saying. I've never heard of anyone putting their mother down because she was getting old, so why would you do that to your dog?

15 year old? wow thats a great age for a collie. i think that hes possibly incontinent... lost control of his bowel. this happens to all old dogs and theres nothing that can be done. dont punish him for it.. he cant help it. keep a close eye on him.... old age affects us all and its so sad that it happens a lot sooner with animals. they are a paty of the family like a child.
my dog became incontinent and soon after had 2 strokes and sadly we had her put to sleep... it broke my heart... my best friend she was. they show inconditional love and she was my pillow to cry on whenever i felt down.
keep a close eye on him and maybe will be a good idea to take him to the vet. i only hope the vet will give u some good news.
take care

Hi
I think your dog is just suffering from ODS (old dog syndrome) he might be getting confused in his old age and not realising he's what he's doing,or he may not be able to keep it in for as long as he used to.Have you changed his diet lately or a change in his routine?
Try taking him out later at night and earlier in the morning see if that helps. If these don't work and you as still concerned with the change in you dog take him to the vet for a check up hope that helps.

He probably can't hold it as long as before because of his age. He may also be a bit disorientated, but the best is to take him out later than you do now, and earlier in the morning.
Also check with your vet that he hasn't got a medical condition.
And if he is not suffering and happy in his life, don't put him down even if you have to do a little bit of cleaning, I'm sure he and you have still plenty of happy times ahead.

Yes it's quite possible it's a symptom of old age my dogs were the same at that age, more accidents at night , and surprises for you in the morning.
Dogs tend to age slowly over a period of time. It is inevitable that natural mental and physical changes will take place. However by providing an enriched and stimulating environment for your dog you can make sure he enjoys his natural life expectancy to the full.

He/she is getting up there in age. It's possible the dog is beginning to have trouble holding it throughout the night.
You could try a later last out before bed time. Try taking up the food a little earlier or don't feed so late.

When dogs get that age some cant hold it through the night. Sometimes a dog can forget its training and its mind goes back to its puppy training stage and may not have learnt it by that age.
