Hi. Ive recently moved house and have a small yard, no grass out back. I have put up a bird table and a high line with bird feeders hanging off, along with fat balls, sunflower seeds etc, but the birds are just not coming. i know they are in the near area as a couple of doors down they have a few trees and I can see them in there, so why won't they come over to my feeders?? Does anyone have any more ideas on what i can do to attract them over??

I find throwing out seeds where there is no grass brings in more birds then you may want. BlueJays, Cadnels, Pigeons, Doves, Finch, Black Birds, Even birds I dont know the name of. Try it and once word in their world gets out you may have more company to enjoy then you ever dreamed of!

They probably aren't coming to your house, because they are used to it not having food there. It's possible that the people who lived there before did not feed them. It will take a little while, but as soon as they discover food, they will show up. I have a feeder and it took a while for the birds to show up. Also, if your feeder is in a high traffic area.........ie..... a walkway, they won't eat there. Make sure the feeder is away from areas where people can walk upon it.

I have many feeders in the garden but only a few will be attractive to the birds. During the summer although less hungry, they will come in large numbers. I have discovered that the location of the feeders (nuts in particular) has been a big factor in the encouragement of the birds. The hawthorn trees in particular encourage a vast amount of bluetits etc whilst the table and dead tree see very few. Cats too can be a particular problem especially in a built up area and also open spaces. Be patient but also consider the location of the feeders and the shelter around them. Different seed blends are available for different species of birds.

Start by keeping your cat in the house......................
Birds like having a place to perch near feeders. That is probably why the neighbor with the trees in the yard is having more success.
At our house, we get more birds at the feeders near the bushes than we do at the feeder near the deck.

Try putting something out that they can smell from a distance, or maybe a trail leading to your yard *just sprinkle seed leading from a place you know they are to your yard* and pretty soon they'll associate your yard with food. When I lived in hawaii we used to keep my rats *smelly little beasts, but i loved them* on the back porch "lanai to the locals* and we had birds out there picking food out of the cage. What I'm saying is, maybe you could get some pet rats to live in a wire birdcage on your porch? I don't know how well that'd work, but hey there's no such thing as a stupid suggestion.... or is that question?

How about leaving very sweet-smelling fruits to attract them?
Like papaya, mango etc.
